•   A LAND CALLED NORWAY  •
copyright 2002 by Steven Carley

Norway is divided into nineteen counties, each with its own distinct landscape and character. The capital city of Oslo is actually a county unto itself.
Norway's topography is unique. The country measures 1,100 miles at its longest point and varies in width from 270 miles to just 4 miles. The 13,000 mile coastline cut deep by fjords, is also dotted by more than 150,000 islands. Allocation of land presents startling contradictions: mountains comprise 62% of all land area; forests 21%; islands 7%; lakes and rivers 5%; farmland 3%; glaciers 1.5%; and cities 0.4%.
